Profile
In a style that is increasingly being referred to as 'The African Cubism', Mwai looks at life from various perspectives, while at the same time he reveals his quest for a cultural identity. His themes are mainly based on African culture and philosophy. His paintings are characterized by the rich use of browns and the ochres, perhaps influenced by his early childhood where he would use sticks to draw on the red soil of the slopes of Mt Kenya. He attended Kianjiru Primary School and Kianyaga High School before joining Kenyatta Univesity for bachelors of Fine Art and Master of Fine Art degrees. In the last two years his work has evolved from the smooth-textured dark browns to the rough-textured bold reds. He has held joint exhibitions at the French Cultural Centre and at the National Museums of Kenya.
